20 years ago... does anyone recall?

Hey all. Do you recall twenty years ago? We were in a recession... Remember that twenty years ago George Bush and Dan Potato were in the White House? It was all their fault that the country was in the tank. (That’s what we heard all the time.) We had been at war with Iraq. The republicans were the cause of all the nations’ problems. They raised taxes after promising not to raise taxes. “Read my lips...”. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Any self-respecting republican should never forget that fat lie, or learn to read lips.

Then, after a three way race for president, we got Bill Clinton and Al Gore for the next eight years. The third party idea was to blame for Clinton getting elected.

Then it was eight years of paranoid delusions of Bill Clinton taking the nation into a socialist/communistic regime. The Brady bill passed. The family leave act was signed into law. The President got a B.J. in the oval office. The president lied under oath. White Water went out to sea. And, oh yeah, the nation came out of the trillion dollar economic hole and ended up in the black for the first time in decades. All sorts of things seemed brighter.

Then the race in 2000 started up with all sorts of blustering about how the democrats were taking us down a path of destruction. Who did the voters like best? Who got the nomination for the GOP? A born again murderer! A man who proudly fast-tracked the death penalty in his home state. This was a selling point. -Seems to me it’s mostly “Pro-Lifers” that are for the death penalty. Think about that logic for a moment...- I digress.

Bush Jr. is appointed and surrounded by many of the same people from Daddy’s four years. Things seemed strange and surreal. Then, that day, 9/11. Well everything changed and we heard things like “evil-doers”. B-52 air strikes against Afghanistan, then ground troops. The fourth amendment was raped. Then Iraq wouldn’t comply with the U.N. sanctions and, suddenly, they had weapons of mass destruction. Air strikes, then ground troops. Spend, spend, spend.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, magical loans were being dreamed up. -While the infrastructure was/is crumbling. People earning 30k a year were buying homes that were sold for people earning 60k a year. No worry, balloon payments will make everything alright. Bit by bit, we were hearing that things were not going good for businesses, as the administration kept waging war and telling folks at home get out there and spend, spend, spend.

Oh my, something was coming and people were acting like things were going to be OK. Then, in 2008, the domino’s began falling one by one. Slow at first, then faster and faster and, well you know the rest. Ahem! All under a republican administration mind you. (I know, I know...that was so long ago and none of it is relevant today. Not to mention that the current president was on watch when the head chief “evil doer” was finally caught and killed. Mission actually accomplished.) I digress yet again.

So tell me again why I should begin trusting the Republicans? Is their track record that fantastic? This does go to my theory of “the forever argument...”. (Please make note of where and what’s going on this year.) Lets see where we are 20 years from now. I’m betting a shiny new dime it will be ‘bout the same. Different faces, different social issues ( I hope, damn, I truly hope, different social issues...).

I suppose it comes down to this...

As long as we continue to not face the day and only keep looking to tomorrow instead of long term, hoping for the fantasy of happily ever after, while forgetting the past, well, you know the old adage about being doomed to repeat it. Personally, I think that has been the problem in the landscape. People don’t want to think too far ahead and are to quick to dismiss the past. Hence, here we shall go again. I hope to your god, that we collectively find the answer that ends this repetitive madness.

Will end on this...

A child puts their little hand on a hot stove and gets burned. A child learns from the mistake and is careful to not let it happen again. We, as adults, need to remember that lesson. Or, at the very least, quit bitching about getting burned each day.
